Cataract Surgery: What to Expect
Cataract Surgery: What to Expect
Cataract surgery is an outpatient procedure that generally takes less than 60 minutes to complete. Prior to performing the procedure, your Kansas City cataract surgeon will ensure your absolute comfort by applying numbing eye drops to your eye. It is only after you have been made comfortable that we will begin the surgical portion of your cataract treatment.
To remove the cataract, one of our surgeons will need to make a small incision in your eye. A needle-thin probe that emits ultrasound energy to break up your cataract will then be inserted into the incision. Once the cataract has been emulsified, gentle suction will be used to remove the clouded lens.
After your cataract has been removed, your cataract surgeon will inject an intraocular lens into the capsular bag that previously contained the clouded lens. You will not be able to see or feel your new lens and, within a few weeks, it should begin to greatly restore your vision. How quickly this occurs will be partially dependent on the lens implant options you choose prior to your cataract surgery.
Recovering From Cataract Surgery
Cataract surgery recovery isn’t as bad as it may sound. Itching and mild discomfort are the common symptoms in the first few days following the procedure. Be careful not to touch or scratch your eye and to use all of the eye drops prescribed by your Kansas City cataract surgeon. Complete healing may take up to two months. You will visit our office for follow-up visits during your recovery period to ensure everything is progressing as it should.
While cataract surgery is typically both effective and safe, you should contact our office immediately if you experience persistent pain, increased eye redness, or vision disruptions during your recovery period.
During your cataract surgery consultation we will be happy to answer any questions you may have, and to discuss what you can expect before, during, and after your procedure in full.
