• HERE ARE 4 THINGS YOU DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT LASIK SURGERY

The cornea is the outer layer of the eye that helps focus light onto the retina. When the cornea is not perfectly shaped — a common occurrence — the images projected onto the retina will be blurry or out of focus. These irregularities on the cornea are known as refractive errors and distort the vision of the eye. Often, these refractive errors cannot be corrected by glasses or contact lenses, and a surgical operation is required. For many people, LASIK surgery is the perfect solution.

LASIK is a safe, FDA approved method for treating numerous vision imperfections. Before the surgery can begin, the patient’s visual prescription is calculated similar to determining a prescription for eyeglasses and contact lenses. The information cultivated from these measurements is then entered into a computer laser, which guides the doctor in remodeling the patient’s cornea throughout the LASIK procedure.

If you’re considering surgery to correct your own vision but you’re not quite sure LASIK is ideal for you, here are four helpful facts you might not know about LASIK:

    • 1. LASIK surgery can correct multiple conditions, such as myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. Often, many patients will have better vision than they ever had with glasses or contact lenses.
    • 2. The recovery is quick. Many patients, in fact, will choose to return to work on the same day. Only a few hours of rest are required before resuming daily activities.
    • 3. The whole surgery is short. LASIK surgery usually takes less than twenty minutes to complete for both eyes. The process requires no sedatives or anesthesia, and the process begins shortly after you arrive.
    • 4. Most patients don’t feel any pain. Your surgeon will administer pain-numbing eye drops before the surgery, and additional pain killers are rarely necessary. Furthermore, LASIK has a high success rate, with approximately 96 percent of patients improving to 20/20 vision after the operation.
