• YOU SHOULDN’T SKIP ROUTINE EYE CHECKUPS

Eyes are referred to as the windows to the soul, but we don’t think of them as windows to our health. If you don’t wear glasses or contacts or have any other eye problems, you might not see the value in visiting an optometrist for a checkup. You may think it’s a waste of time and money, but you should consider what you are missing from a health perspective. Visiting an eye doctor will help you detect eye problems before they develop and help spot signs of other diseases as well.

Let’s take a look at why you should consider regularly having your eyes checked:

YOUR EYE DOCTOR CAN DETECT FUTURE VISION PROBLEMS

Sure, you may have 20/20 vision and no problems with your eyes right now, but what about in the future? Chances are, you probably brush off future eye problems as something every person has to deal with as they age, but the reality is, many problems can be avoided or treated early on if your optometrist catches an eye condition before it further develops. Slow developing eye problems include, age-related Macular Degeneration, Glaucoma, and Diabetic Retinopathy. Symptoms of such eye problems may not be visible to you, but they can be seen by an eye doctor.

A regular vision test — reading letters on a board from a distance — isn’t an eye examination. An eye examination requires a licensed professional to examine your eye with the proper tools and techniques.

YOUR EYES SHOW SYMPTOMS OF OTHER DISEASES

It stands within reason to understand that your eyes are a reliable indicator of eye problems, but you probably don’t realize that they indicate other diseases as well. Your eyes can show symptoms of many diseases, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, HIV, and certain types of cancer. You can see some signs on your own in a mirror, but others can only be seen by a professional.

Here are a few of the signs in your eyes that you can see for yourself:

    • Bloody eyes
    • Change in color of one eye
    • Asymmetrically sized pupils
    • Rings around your cornea

Signs only your eye doctor can see in your eyes include the following:

    • Abnormal optic nerve endings
    • Retinal patches and hemorrhages
    • Plaque in your arteries

If you have been skipping your routine checkups, it’s possible you may be failing to catch signs of a serious health condition. Do you need to have your eyes checked by a medical professional? Call Silverstein Eye Centers today to make an appointment for an eye exam.
