According to data presented to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), about 56 percent of all LASIK patients achieve results of 20/20 or better. More than 90 percent of LASIK patients experience 20/40 vision or better. Incidentally, in most regions 20/40 vision is good enough to drive without corrective eyewear.
Even with these statistics, it is important to understand that results vary by individual case. Other considerations include:
- Degree of refractive disorder. Patients with high degrees of nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism may be less likely to achieve 20/20 vision from LASIK.
- Overall satisfaction. Definitive studies state that more than 95 percent of LASIK patients are satisfied with their vision results.
- Improvement of uncorrected vision. The goal of LASIK is to improve how well you see without correctives lenses. The vast majority of patients have improved vision after LASIK, even though they may have to use glasses or contact lenses for some activities.
