Macular degeneration is an eye disease affecting the central part of your retina. The macula is located in the center of your retina. The retina is the tissue lining the back of your eye. There are two types of macular degeneration – “wet” and “dry” – and both are associated with deterioration of the macula. Wet macular degeneration is caused by leaking blood vessels that have grown under the retina. Dry macular degeneration is thought to be caused by fatty deposits developing beneath the retina.
Some of the signs and symptoms of this eye condition include:
- Difficulty adjusting visually to low-light situations
- Blurriness of words when you are reading
- Increasing blurriness in the center of your vision
- Problems recognizing the faces of people you are looking at
- Fading of colors
