The vision consequences of a cataract may develop gradually. As the cataract grows, the area of cloudiness may expand over an increasing area of your vision. Regular eye exams allow your eye doctor to check for the early signs of cataracts and other vision problems and eye diseases.
If you do have a cataract in one or both eyes, cataract surgery can restore a clear, unobstructed eye lens. During cataract surgery, the cataract is removed and replaced with a lens implant.
Cataracts are formed when protein in your eye lens begins to clump together. The clumped protein fibers distort the way light comes into your eye, clouding your vision. Cataracts are a common result of growing older, and certain risk factors – including diabetes and smoking – have been linked to an increased risk of cataracts. Some studies have shown a diet high in fruits, vegetables and other antioxidant sources may prevent cataracts.
